Recognising the challenges riders face
Riders seek support for a wide range of situations, including loss of confidence after a fall, anxiety when mounting or riding, nervousness about cantering or jumping, competition nerves, or feeling tense and defensive in the saddle. Some riders begin to avoid situations that once felt comfortable. Others find it difficult to trust their horse again or feel hesitant after injury or a difficult experience.
You may recognise some of these experiences:
• Feeling nervous before mounting or even before arriving at the yard
• Hesitating to ask your horse to move forward or canter
• Avoiding hacking out, jumping, or open spaces
• Feeling tense in the saddle and worrying how your horse might react
• Replaying a fall or difficult experience in your mind
• Knowing logically that you should feel confident, yet your body reacting differently
Because riding involves working with a large, sensitive animal, the mind naturally becomes protective when it senses risk. With the right support, these patterns can soften and confidence can return.
Regaining confidence after a fall
Losing confidence after a fall is one of the most common experiences riders face. Even when injuries have healed and you know logically that you are capable, your body may still react with tension or hesitation. You might notice yourself feeling anxious before riding, reluctant to ask your horse to move forward, or avoiding situations that once felt comfortable. Some riders even begin to question whether they should continue riding at all. These reactions are not a sign of weakness. They are simply the mind trying to protect you after a frightening experience. With the right approach, the mind can process what happened and gradually relearn that riding can feel safe and enjoyable again. As confidence returns, riders often find their balance, focus, and communication with their horse improve naturally.
A calm and supportive approach
Sessions take place in a relaxed and comfortable environment where we work at your pace. Using gentle techniques such as clinical hypnotherapy, NLP, and performance psychology, we focus on helping your mind and nervous system respond more calmly when riding.
Work may include:
• Reducing anticipatory anxiety before riding
• Rebuilding confidence after a fall or setback
• Restoring calm focus in the saddle
• Improving competition composure
• Strengthening trust in your own judgement and ability
Many riders notice positive changes within a small number of sessions.
As riders regain calm confidence, they often find their horse responds differently too. Riding begins to feel smoother, more balanced, and enjoyable again.
Experience you can trust
Alongside my clinical practice, I bring over 30 years of experience as a rider, instructor, and competitor. I am a British Horse Society riding instructor (BHS AI) and ISM, and I understand the unique psychological challenges riders face. Because of this background, sessions are grounded not only in psychology but also in the practical realities of riding and working with horses. Whether you ride for pleasure, competition, or professional development, we can work together to overcome the obstacles that have been holding you back.
